Some copy and paste, I know. Even if this is a bit old, it’s still worth quoting.

Ten Things Social Media Can’t Do - A Healthy Reminder for Setting Expectations (B.L. Ochman)

Social media CAN’T:

Substitute for marketing strategy.
A Twitter campaign or a Facebook page that announces your weekly specials is not a marketing strategy.

Succeed without top management buy-in.
Social media requires a way of thinking that includes willingness to listen to customers, make changes based on feedback and trust employees to talk to customers.
The culture of fear (of job loss, of losing message control, of change) is ingrained in corporate cultures. Top management has to want to change.

Be viewed as a short-term project.
Social media is not a one-shot deal. It’s a long-term commitment to openness, experimentation and change that requires time to bear fruit.

Produce meaningful, measurable results quickly.
One of the complaints about social media is that it can’t be measured. But there are many things that can be measured, including engagement, sentiment and whether increased traffic leads to sales.
Those results can’t be produced or measured in the short term. Like PR, social media marketing often produces its best results in the second and third year.

Be done in-house by the vast majority of companies.
A successful social-media campaign integrates social media into the many elements of marketing, including advertising, digital and PR. Opinion and theory are no match for experience and the best social media marketers now have more than 10 years of experience incorporating interactivity, blogs, forums, user-generated content and contests into online marketing.
You need strategy, contacts, tools, and experience – a combination not generally found in in-house teams, who often reinvent the wheel or use the wrong tools.

Provide a quick fix to the bottom line or a tarnished reputation.
Social media can sometimes provide quick results for a company that’s already a star. When a well-loved company like Zappos or Google employs social media, its loyal fans and followers pay attention.
However, there’s a lot of desperation in a lot of corporate suites these days, and many companies seem been convinced that a social-media campaign can provide a quick fix to sagging sales or reputation issues. Sorry, nuh, uh.

Be done without a realistic budget.
Building a site that incorporates interactivity, allows user-generated content and perhaps also includes e-commerce doesn’t come cheap from anyone who knows what they are doing.
Even taking free software like WordPress and making it function as an effective interactive site, incorporating e-commerce and creating style sheets that integrate with the company’s branding, takes more than time. That takes skill, experience, and money.

Guarantee sales or influence.
Unless your effort can pass the “who cares” test — and most simply can’t — your social media efforts will fall flat.
And unless you know how to drive traffic to your contest, video, blog, event, etc., you’ll have little more than an expensive field of dreams.

Be done by “kids” who “understand social innately”
You can climb Mount Kilaminjaro without a sherpa guide, but why would you? Experience and perspective can make the trip easier, or even save your life.
Companies trying to run social media without experienced consultants waste time, money and reputation on their efforts. And then, sadly, many decide that this new-fangled approach doesn’t work.

Replace PR.
No matter how great your website, video contest, blog, Twitter strategy, etc., you still need publicity. Or you may end up with a tree falling in the forest and nobody hearing it.

I feel a wee bit ashamed because I have not written anything on this page for so long. Well, I have been quite busy at work, since pretty soon my time in Finland will expire.

In May 2009 I moved to Tampere, where I have been working on a project called Demola, supported by Hermia Ltd and Nokia Research Center. Demola is an open innovation environment for the creators of the next generation of digital products and services. It facilitates dozens of multidisciplinary innovation project teams annually. Demola enables the creative talent and the globally connected industry to collaborate systematically in concrete innovation projects. It is focused on ICT-intensive and digital media services with local impact and global market potential.

I have been an active Demola team player, helping in building the community, taking care of the communication and the IT aspects of the framework, developing a new information architecture and interface for the website.

The new version of demola.fi has been online since last week, there is still some polishing to do, but the ultimate goal is accomplished.

And now? What’s next? I have started to send job applications around the world, and very soon this will become my main occupation sadly. At least I finally may find some time for improving my little zoobrilliance.

Recently it has happened many times to hear people complaining about the poor level of privacy on Facebook, of course collecting our data is Facebook first aim, after all they give you a social network for free, the money has to come out from somewhere.

Knowing the first 10 basic steps to set up a decent level of privacy on Facebook becomes naturally important.

While there are a few other small things to keep in mind, by following these 10 settings you are well on your way to an embarrassment free future on Facebook. Anyway, keep in mind that while you may have turned off the visibility of many profile sections, there is no way to prevent all photos or videos from being visible if friends of yours make the images visible. Just make it clear to your friend, especially if you’re using Facebook for business.

Nowadays people started considering me such a Facebook expert, well I am an active user since three years, and I have been throughout many phases of the social network, but I am not a guru definitely. One of the most discussed issue is – of course – privacy.

I was used to thinking that a wee common sense was enough for surfing, but common people disconfirmed this idea. On the Net people are extremely vulnerable. Newbies do not understand rules and tend thinking that give as much info as required will not cause any harm. False.

We can find different kinds of users, and a good balance between too enthusiastic and too careful could identify the perfect user, but of course every person has a own story.

For example, in the social networks world the diffident user – in my words - has just discovered Facebook few months ago, doesn’t get the point of Twitter at all, and definitely doesn’t want a new platform for sharing thoughts like Buzz. He/She does not want learning a new interface, likes the way as things are. Sometimes this kind of user takes a big risk in term of privacy because of the lack of awareness about it.

For starting have a look here: www.internetprivacyfordummies.com

I couldn’t agree more.

I’m an unrepentant fan of social media. I couldn’t live without Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. But there’s one thing about these online communities that drives me crazy: the social media newbie.

You know the type. She joins a LinkedIn group and starts posting links to her blog and invites to her webinar and thinly veiled advertisements for her e-book, laced with exclamation points and new age references. Her tweets include your Twitter handle alongside for no other apparent reason than to get your attention.

When you gently ask her to stop spamming her new social media acquaintances she responds with shock and disbelief. “But I’m just trying to share the important knowledge I possess that will be so useful to everyone,” she protests. “My goal is to help them!”

You are a spammer.

In this age of information overload, the most valuable thing I can give another person is my attention. My time. So when you, social media newbie, demand that attention you are actually taking something valuable away from me.

It goes back to the first rule of online communities: lurk first. Your first act in a new community should be to listen.

I have to say about.

I didn’t like Twitter since the first day, actually it was difficult to get the point. I mean, why should have I needed to share my life in 140 characters? We have so many tools already for living in public, did I need a new one?

And then I worked at Mindtrek – which is the leading Nordic digital media and business conference, focusing on social media & Web 2.0.

How people have been using Twitter during those three days opened me new ways. I understood that tweeting is about sharing information, especially links, and is a way to get information, in particular links. Being an active user also means starting to follow interesting people, which will lead you straight to a wider understanding of the medium, and how it can be useful for you. For me it’s mainly about work, but sometimes I share Spotify URIs, weather forecasts or nice quotes.

Everyone can have a different approach to it, but yes I like Twitter now, though it’s becoming addicting.

What are you saying about?

A new way to be social: Bambuzer, which is a service of live video streaming from your mobile phone or webcam sharable in real time.

Bambuser is a 3 years old service founded in Sweden, everyone can sign up for free, and recently they introduced sharing of live broadcasts to Facebook, Twitter and other 3rd party services . The most common phones are compatible, like Symbian and Android phones.
